Abstract

This section evaluates Israel’s restrictive interventions and attacks that resulted in fatalities on the press and media outlets working in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel after the “Operation Aqsa Flood” on October 7, 2023. The pre-October 7 conditions in the geography under Israel’s control were not healthy for news production. An ecosystem was created in which press activities were surrounded by censorship mechanisms. However, dozens of media members lost their lives, especially in the intensive attacks on Gaza before the ceasefire in January 2025. This section of the study will examine both the balance sheet of events that resulted in fatalities and the extent to which the imposition of restrictions and prohibitions on the media harmed access to information. Although the study will focus on events in 2024, it will also include recent notes that fall outside this date range from time to time.
