Gulf Countries’ Palestine Policy 2024

Abstract

The positions of the GCC member states have been closely monitored throughout 2024 as Israel’s attacks on civilians in Gaza have intensified and turned into genocide. Given their broad religious and ethnic commonalities, expectations for these countries to support Palestine have increased. During this process, Qatar emerged as a mediator, while the international community closely observed Saudi Arabia and the UAE’s stances. the Gulf monarchies have prioritized diplomatic efforts within international organizations to establish an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders and to secure international recognition for Palestine. They have also played a key role in pushing for a ceasefire, preventing Israeli violations, and ensuring urgent humanitarian aid. Although they have opposed the displacement of Palestinians, they have also explored different options regarding who would govern Gaza in the post-war period as part of “day-after plans.” As in many other regional issues, the Gulf monarchies have been divided over Israel’s occupation of Palestine, yet they have maintained a unified diplomatic effort.
